Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District

This new district wraps around the Twin Cities from Washington County in the east, extending through Anoka and Sherburne Counties to the north, Wright County in the west and reaching up to Stearns and Benton Counties in the northwest. Anoka County is the largest population area with 186,000 residents followed by Washington with 120,000, Stearns with 106,000 and Wright with 90,000. So the population is spread pretty evenly across the district.
Outer Twin Cities' suburbs dominate the district and transportation issues are a huge priority to its residents due to the high number of commuters. The local economy is supported mostly by commuters with a concentration of dairy farmers to the northwest. The people who live in the 6th district are concerned about economic and family issues such as education, health care and the environment.
Growth and sprawl, along with transportation, are increasingly important matters to the residents of the 6th CD. New housing developments are springing up all over this district in areas that, even recently, were farm fields.
In the heart of the district the town of Anoka bills itself as the Halloween Capital of the World and boasts about hometown hero Garrison Keillor. The North Star Corridor rail project is of huge interest to everyone living near the proposed line from the Twin Cities through Anoka to St. Cloud and all points in between.
